Tub Valve Swap and Rotten Cabinet Repair Done Right

Sometimes what looks like a small problem is hiding something worse behind the wall - or under the cabinet. That's exactly what we ran into on this job. A worn tub and shower valve that needed replacing. Rotten cabinet material that had been sitting there, slowly getting worse. Two different issues. Same root cause - water doing damage that nobody could see yet.

We started with the shower valve. To get to the supply lines properly, we opened up the ceiling above the tub surround. What we found was a brass tee fitting tied into red and blue PEX lines running through the framing. The old valve was worn and the connections needed to be done right - not just patched. We replaced the valve and got everything tight before closing things back up. The finished result is a clean brushed nickel trim kit seated flush against the tile wall with a new showerhead above.

The cabinet work was its own story. The bottom of the cabinet was deteriorated - the kind of damage you get when moisture gets in and sits long enough to break down the wood. We stripped out the rotted material and rebuilt the cabinet floor with fresh plywood. Solid footing again. No more soft spots or crumbling edges.

This is the kind of repair work that's easy to put off. The valve still sort of works. The cabinet floor isn't completely gone yet. But that thinking is what turns a couple hundred dollars of repair into a much bigger job down the road.
